Automation…
When looking at automating a process line, a number of parameters must be considered. Perhaps the most significant parameters that should be considered are:
- Material Handling
- Controls
Looking at material handling, there is really only one requirement…. the machine uses a guided lift and fall. This design feature minimizes if not eliminates any swing and sway as the machine accelerates from a stop or decelerates to a stop. Looking at controls, it usually comes down to the type of hoist control algorithm that controls the movement of the hoist. We design programmable hoist systems for electroplating lines, providing precision control and efficiency. Our automated hoists are ideal for improving throughput while minimizing operator workload. We also offer black oxide equipment, phosphate systems, and anodizing equipment to meet various finishing requirements.

WEM does not design or execute our own control system. Instead, we work with four different companies that provide controls to the metal finishing industry:
1. Aucos…. a German company that provides the greatest number of control systems to the industry world-wide. WEM personnel have a relationship with this company that dates back to the early 1990’s. Aucos would provide a full control service….. software for the man-machine interface, the hoist control & the process control, PLC programming, fabrication of the MCC panel along with on-site start-up and training services. https://www.aucos.de
2. GPR Wet Process Group…. a south Florida company providing software for the man-machinie interface, the hoist control & process control, PLC programming along with on-site startup and training services. https://gpr-wpg.com
3. Manit Systems…. a Southern California company that has been providing systems since the mid-1980’s. They specialize in the software for the man-machine interface, the hoist control & the process control along with on-site start-up and training services. https://www.manit.com
4. IPEC Global….. a Southern California company that would provide the PLC programming, design and fabrication of the MCC panel to support the Manit controls. https://ipecglobal.com
The most efficient hoist control algorithm, in terms of productivity per hoist, is a timeway….. which is a repeating time/motion cycle. As a general rule, a timeway can provide only limited flexibility through skip choices and/or repeating timeway cycles. Flexibility is basically limited to the talent and experience of the individual that writes the timeway. In addition, significant changes in the tank sequence or immersion times usually requires that the control company does the modifications. These limitations have rendered the timeway somewhat obsolete. However, the two greatest advantages to a timeway hoist algorithm is that they are:
- They provide more productivity per hoist
The production throughput is predictable
As a result, most control systems for programmable hoists have moved to a dynamically scheduled system in which the algorithms reserve hoist time and tank time to limit conflicts. A conflict is the simple fact that the hoist cannot be in two places at once nor can two workloads be in the same station at once. The disadvantage to the dynamically scheduled control system is that it is less productive than a timeway and, because the productivity is dependent upon the mix of work being processed at any given time, the production capacity cannot be predicted. The advantage to this system is that the operator defines the process recipe that generally consists of the tank sequence, minimum & maximum immersion times, drip times, DC power settings and other sequence related equipment.
We would like to point out that Aucos has the exclusive capability to offer a unique timeway system…. one that offers the productivity and predictability of the timeway with the flexibility of the dynamic scheduled software. You can run multiple, synchronized timeways simutanesoulsy in any random order. Unfortunately, if you want to make significant changes to any of the timeways, it requires that Aucos make the changes. Our engineering team builds state-of-the-art automated electroplating equipment systems tailored to your line requirements. We also manufacture manual plating equipment for facilities that require operator flexibility and control. Whether you’re upgrading an existing line or installing a new system, our automated and manual metal finishing equipment options meet your production and quality needs.
Electrical Control Panels….
In addition to the control systems listed above, Workman Engineering & Manufacturing can design and build electrical panels to upgrade or replace a current panel. These panels may be for automated lines or for small internal projects not related to the plating line industry. Let Workman Engineering & Manufacturing know how we can assist you.
